Description of the Math and Science Symposium (MASS)

Abstract

Southeast Educational, Inc., BWX Technologies, Inc. Y-12, Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), Shaw Environmental Infrastructure, Inc., the Tennessee Department of Education, the United States Department of Education, National Science Foundation, Pellissippi State Technical Community College and another non-profit foundation are excited to share discussions and publications with you regarding projects in mathematics and science. We believe that the dialogue that occurred during this symposium increased our collective knowledge. Further, the dialogue allowed all of us to better use funding to increase the mathematics and science knowledge of teachers and students PK - 20.

This conference began as a conversation regarding how math and science projects should share ideas regarding professional development opportunities, evaluations and design frameworks while still working on projects in real time. This symposium was designed to share successes, to discuss obstacles, and to dialogue for a common understanding of the collective data that projects have amassed and where math and science project work should focus.

The sponsors appreciated your attendance and your willingness to share your ideas. You are encouraged to read, question and probe the ideas that are presented in print or shared at the conference itself, so that everyone can come to a common understanding of what good math and science projects include in their evaluations, in their professional development design frameworks and in their professional development.
